How HyperOrbit Teaches Astronomy & Physics

Textbook diagrams inevitably distort planetary scales and present planets as static spheres on paper. HyperOrbit replaces passive memorisation with experiential celestial mechanics:

  • 1. Explore the Living Orrery: Drag and pan across the Solar System. Speed up time to 100x warp speed to watch Mercury zip past the Sun in 88 days while Neptune takes 165 years. Toggle between Classroom Scale and True Astronomical Scale.
  • 2. Dive into Planet Dossiers: Click any planet to zoom the camera directly into orbit. Inspect its internal cutaways (Crust, Mantle, Core), atmospheric composition, moons, surface gravity, and escape velocities.
  • 3. Solve Applied Mission Challenges: Put knowledge to work! Manually align the Moon's shadow cone to cast a Total Solar Eclipse, orient a comet's tail against solar wind pressure, calculate rocket burns to achieve circular orbit without crashing, and test Kepler's Harmonic Law.
  • 4. Earn Your Wings & Flight Certificate: Advance your astronaut rank from Initiate to Pathfinder to Chief Astrophysicist. Generate a verifiable completion diploma for your portfolio.

The Three Educational Flight Tiers

Tier 1

🌟 Initiate (Primary / Basic 1–6)

Designed for young explorers. Focuses on spatial order, classification, and visual intuition:

  • The Great Planet Parade: Arrange the 8 planets in order from the Sun using the mnemonic "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles". Distinguish inner rocky worlds from outer gas giants.
  • Day & Night Flashlight: Rotate a 3D Earth globe with city pins (Lagos, London, Tokyo, New York) to see how axial spin creates day and night.
  • The Cosmic Scale Balancer: Experience how 1,300 Earths fit inside Jupiter and 1.3 million Earths fit inside the Sun!
Tier 2

🛡️ Pathfinder (Junior Secondary / JSS 1–3)

Aligned with NERDC Basic Science for JSS students exploring forces, scales, and deep space bodies:

  • Scale of the Solar System (AU): Understand the Astronomical Unit (~150 million km) and gravitational orbital glue.
  • Eclipse Alignment Sandbox: Trace light rays and cast the dark Umbra and partial Penumbra cones for Solar and Lunar eclipses.
  • Comet Tail Deflector: Discover why comet tails ALWAYS point away from the Sun regardless of flight vector, pushed by the continuous Solar Wind.
  • The Mystery Planet Dossier: Identify planets from sensor telemetry (e.g. why Venus's runaway greenhouse atmosphere makes it hotter than Mercury).
Tier 3

⚡ Commander (Senior Secondary / SSS 1–3 WAEC & JAMB)

Rigorous physics simulations directly testing core WAEC, NECO, and JAMB Physics topics:

  • Kepler’s 3 Laws of Planetary Motion: Vary eccentricity ($e$) and semi-major axis ($a$). Watch orbital velocity peak at perihelion, equal area sectors sweep in equal times, and verify $T^2 \propto a^3$.
  • Newtonian Orbital Insertion: Fire thrusters to lock a probe into a circular orbit at $v_o = \sqrt{GM/r}$. Beware of falling below circular speed (suborbital crash) or exceeding escape velocity $v_e = \sqrt{2} v_o$.
  • Solar Dynamics & CME Shield: Explore thermonuclear core fusion ($4^1H \to ^4He + \text{energy}$), magnetic sunspots, solar flares, and Earth's magnetosphere auroral shielding.
